Course overview

The aim of this course is to understanding of neurodiversity, challenge misconceptions, and equip participants with the tools to create a more inclusive and supportive work environment for neurodivergent individuals.

Everyone has a brain that is unique to them. There are natural differences in how people experience, relate to, and interact with the world around them.

These variations can impact learning, attention, mood, and other mental functions.

Neurodiversity is the term used to describe these differences.

For the individual, neurodiversity means their unique cognitive style is valid and valuable, even if it differs from what’s considered "typical." It emphasizes strengths as well as challenges, encourages inclusion and understanding, and supports environments that adapt to different needs rather than expecting individuals to conform.

Who should do this course? It is aimed to help all workers have a better understanding of neurodiversity.

Course modules

Module 1 - An introduction to neurodiversity – In this initial module we will look at what neurodiversity is and the spectrum that it covers. How neurodiversity can be split into the three areas; applied, clinical and acquired. This will raise your awareness and dispel the misconceptions surrounding neurodiversity.

Module 2 - Types of neurodivergence – We will delve deeper into the three groups over neurodivergence and take a look at the most common types of neurodiversity under each, including, Autism Spectrum Condition, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Tourette Syndrome, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and Dyscalculia. In addition, we will give you an overview of PTSD, brain injury and the effects of neurological illnesses which can affect the brain and in turn lead to experiences that differ from a neurotypical brain.

Module 3 - Neurodiversity on the workplace – In this final module we will look at legislation and the protections for neurodiverse employees and the responsibilities of employers. How you can support colleagues and ways to remove barriers. The role of HR and managers, inclusive workplaces; including communication strategies, flexible environments and encouraging a strengths-based approach all contribute to this.
