Modern slavery is an international problem, it is about the exploitation of other people with the purpose of making money. It’s big business with an estimated £150 billion dollars being made each year fromforced labour.

You may have heard about cases in the news where victims have been forced to work on farms, nails bars, restaurants, and car washes, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Social care, domestic servitude, sex trafficking (including children), debt bondage, criminal exploitation are just a few other areas where modern slavery is happening.

This course will help to raise awareness of modern slavery, the different types, where it happens and how to recognise and refer a person if you have concerns.

Course content

Modules you will cover in this Introduction to Modern Slavery Training:
Module 1  An introduction to trafficking and modern slavery - This module provides an overview of modern slavery and the different types. You will understand the difference between people smuggling and trafficking, the reasons why people traffic others and how victims are lured in.
Module 2 -Types of modern slavery part 1 - There are many different types of trafficking, so we have broken these down into two modules so that we can delve a little deeper. We look at what is involved in the different types and the impact on the victims. This module looks at sex trafficking, child sex trafficking, child soldiers and organ harvesting.
Module 3Types of modern slavery part 2 - Following on from module 2 this covers forced labour (and the sub categories), bonded labour/debt bondage, domestic servitude, forced marriage and criminal exploitation.
Module 4 - Modern slavery in the UK - This module focuses on the main types of modern slavery found in the UK. Labour exploitation (nail bars, car washes, hospitality, social care) and criminal exploitation (cannabis farms, country lines, pickpocketing, financial abuse, forced shoplifting, forced begging and busking). In addition, we look at signs to look out for that may indicate modern slavery is a potential risk.
Module 5 - Legislation and support - In this final module we look at legislation in place to prevent and address modern slavery including: The Palermo Protocol, The Modern Slavery Act 2015, Slavery and Trafficking Prevention Orders and Slavery and Trafficking Risk Orders. We then explore the support out there including, First Responders, The National Referral Mechanism, making a referral and trafficked status.
