Our Level 5 Strategic Safeguarding Leadership Programme is a comprehensive two-day advanced programme designed for professionals who have strategic, organisational or senior leadership responsibility for safeguarding.
The programme is aimed at those who are responsible for leading safeguarding arrangements, influencing organisational practice, managing complex safeguarding concerns and providing strategic oversight and assurance. It moves beyond individual practice to explore how effective safeguarding is led, governed, challenged and continuously improved across organisations and partnerships.
The course examines the legislation, statutory guidance and research evidence that underpin safeguarding practice and considers how these translate into strategic responsibilities. Delegates will explore effective partnership working with Local Safeguarding Partnerships and Safeguarding Adults Boards, including how to build strong inter-agency relationships and navigate the complex dynamics that can arise between different organisations.
A key focus is strategic safeguarding leadership, including risk management, escalation and challenge. Delegates will develop the confidence to recognise when practice or organisational arrangements require escalation and explore how to challenge effectively while maintaining constructive professional relationships.
The programme also considers the emotional component of safeguarding, including the impact of complex and distressing safeguarding work on practitioners and leaders. Delegates will explore how effective safeguarding support, supervision and organisational systems can promote resilience and improve practice.
Participants will develop practical knowledge of designing, implementing and auditing robust safeguarding policies and procedures, alongside quality assurance processes and safeguarding audit methodology. The programme also explores how organisations can respond effectively to safeguarding incidents, including People in Positions of Trust (PiPoT) matters and the leadership of internal and external PiPoT meetings.
Delegates will explore how to lead multi-disciplinary review meetings, understand local authority safeguarding structures and reporting requirements, and develop an understanding of safeguarding thresholds, including what may trigger a statutory enquiry and how investigations can be led effectively.
The course also addresses training governance, including conducting a training needs analysis and determining the appropriate level of safeguarding training required for different roles within an organisation.
Learning from Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews (CSPRs) and Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SARs) is examined from a strategic perspective, with a focus on translating learning into sustainable improvements in policy, practice, training and organisational culture.
Finally, the programme explores complex safeguarding issues, enabling leaders to consider risk, vulnerability, exploitation, professional challenge and partnership working in situations where safeguarding concerns may be particularly difficult to identify or respond to.
